November 19, 2024 – MTN Group, Africa’s largest telecommunications company by subscribers, is making a bold move to expand internet access in rural and underserved regions across the continent. The company is reportedly in talks to partner with Starlink, the satellite internet service launched by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, to provide affordable high-speed internet to Africa’s most remote areas. This partnership is expected to help MTN reach millions of people living in regions where traditional infrastructure is difficult to build and maintain.
Starlink’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites promise faster, more reliable internet with lower latency than traditional satellite services. This makes Starlink an ideal candidate for MTN, which has long faced challenges in connecting rural populations due to the high costs of deploying terrestrial networks.
“We are excited about the potential of working with Starlink to deliver reliable, high-speed internet to communities that have been underserved for far too long,” said Ralph Mupita, CEO of MTN Group. “By leveraging Starlink’s cutting-edge satellite technology, we can offer a solution to the connectivity gap that has hampered Africa’s digital growth.”
The Starlink service, which already provides satellite internet to customers in several countries worldwide, is seen as a game-changer for regions where traditional broadband infrastructure is not viable. MTN’s partnership with Starlink could pave the way for a major shift in how rural Africa accesses the internet. With billions in untapped potential, rural markets could see huge improvements in education, healthcare, and economic development as a result of better internet access.

Impact on Rural Communities:
For rural Africans, access to Starlink-powered internet could open doors to remote education, telemedicine, and digital entrepreneurship. In countries like South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya, where large portions of the population live in rural areas, this collaboration could prove transformative. Small farmers could benefit from weather forecasts and agricultural advice, while students could gain access to online learning platforms.
MTN’s partnership with Starlink could be a critical step in the telecom giant’s larger mission to boost digital inclusion across the continent, helping to ensure that the benefits of the internet are felt by all, not just those in major urban centers.
With Starlink and MTN joining forces, the dream of a connected Africa may be closer than ever before.
